Things Keep Getting “Better”

One of my favorite parts of my job is going on TV. I affectionately call my new gig a “beauty editor brought to life” and going on TV sure does bring beauty products to life. You are able to express how a product works in a whole new way. Plus, luckily the only other language I speak, soundbytes (ha!) is put to good use. But, trust me, it’s also a lot (I mean A LOT) of work. From getting the segment approved to editing down tons and tons of products to 5 top choices, learning the material inside and out, and making it all seem as easy as 1, 2, 3 can be tough. Here’s a sneak peek of some behind-the-scenes shots of a recent segment with Better TV (check your local listings). I loved working with their host, Rhiannon Ally and can’t wait to see how they turn out.

Prettily yours,Rebekah

Backstage at New York Fashion Week

Ever wonder what happens behind-the-scenes at a top fashion show in NYC? I went backstage at the Cesar Galindo show to find out the 411 on new fall trends and beauty secrets from Mary Kay’s celebrity makeup artist, Ashunta Sheriff. So what’s in store for next fall? Expect to see punk rock clothes and smokey eyes. Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos. Check back when my website is up and running on www.marykay.com.

Welcome to “How to Look Pretty”!

Hi! Welcome to my blog! It’s finally here and all I can say is YES!

My name is Rebekah, and I’ve been a beauty editor at some leading women’s magazines for the past decade. I’ve interviewed thousands of makeup artists, dermatologists, and beauty pros, and written and edited stories on everything from how to find the right red lipstick to preventing skin cancer and choosing the best jeans for your body. I’ve logged hours upon hours at beauty and fashion shoots with some of the best photographers and stylists in the business, and I’ve picked up top insider secrets along the way (yes, I’ll share!). I recently left the magazine world to spread my wings and my personal beauty philosophy as a multimedia beauty, fashion, and healthy living expert. What does that mean? Well, you’ll be seeing me report on beauty and fashion trends on national and local TV shows and get all my insider tricks, tips and picks on my blog, via Twitter, Facebook and in other fun and surprising ways (stay tuned!).

If there’s one message I want to get across it’s this: While I’m definitely pro-pretty, I’m also anti-perfection. Now that I am reporting on beauty trends from my own point-of-view, my mission is to deliver news in an honest and real way. I’m going to share a secret: When I was 17 years old, I was in a bad car accident and went through the windshield of my car. After three rounds of surgery, I was left with a scar on my forehead (hence the reason I wear bangs!). I was devastated—and I thought I would never look pretty again. It took years to heal (both inside and out) but I eventually came to realize that being truly pretty is something that comes from within and it can’t be taken away from you no matter what life throws your way. We all have our “scars” that make us feel like we can’t face the day or feel hesitant to try the latest styles. But, looking pretty is about feeling confident, strong, and fearless. As a beauty expert, my goal is to help you feel this way in spite of whatever yours may be. Follow “How to Look Pretty” and I promise that we’re going to have a lot of fun—and look pretty, well, pretty, doing it—along the way…

Prettily yours, Rebekah

The Hostess with the Mostest

I love hosting a fun event and the other night was no exception. On behalf of P&G “Beauty Full Circle” I guided top beauty bloggers through the newest launches from Olay, Secret, Venus, Clairol, and Herbal Essences. I love P&G beauty because their brands are packed with science and research and you know they are really going to do the trick – helping you look your best. As a special treat, I had my hair colored with Natural Instincts latest hair color and styled by Charles Baker Strahan (he’s done Maria’s hair!)…check out my photos. So, what’s hitting stores this spring?

Petite Beauty and Fashion Products

I admit, I love a bulk-sized bottle of body lotion (I mean, I go through it like water!). Plus, my makeup bag that I keep in my bathroom is packed with plenty of choices. But, I’ve learned to streamline what I take with me on the go – whether it’s heading out for dinner with friends or traveling around the country for TV segments. Lugging around fewer beauty products is about choosing multi-taskers that do more than one thing at a time (ha, just like you!) and products with smart, minimalist packaging. Here are some of my favorites that I featured on The Early Show:Footzyrolls $25; footzyrolls.comBrite Smile To-Go Teeth Whitening Pen $25; sephora.com
